The standard instruments of the rondalla include the banduria, laud, octavina, guitar, and bajo de arco (bass guitar). Percussion instruments like the bass drum, cymbal, triangle, tambourines, xylophones, marimba, timpani, kettledrum, castanets, maracas, wood block and the tom-tom can be added for rhythmic effects.
The rondalla instruments have been standardised for greater efficiency. With a few imported components, all Rondalla instruments are produced in the Philippines making use of its native materials. The wood of langka, kamagong, narra, ballatinao, tanguile, rosewood, and the Philippine mahogany are used as materials for the construction of the instruments.
Banduria
The main instrument in the rondalla is the Banduria, which carries the main melody. It is either a 14-stringed instrument made in the Luzon region or a 12-stringed made in the Visayas region. It has a small pear-shaped body with short neck. Its tuning was lowered a tone to F sharp. The Filipinos further developed the banduria giving us the laud, and octavina.
Laud
The Laud is shaped like the banduria but bigger in size and has a longer neck. It has the same strings as the banduria. It usually plays the lower notes in accompaniments, counterparts, and in unison with the bass. The original laud, better known as the "lute", has a round body in the shape of a half pear, a flat neck with seven or more frets, and a separate peg box bent back at an angle. Because of its bigger size, the laud sounds one octave lower than the banduria.
Octavina
The Octavina is shaped like a small guitar. Its function is similar to the laud. The sound of laud and octavina is almost the same except that the octavina sounds more lurid than the laud. The number and pairing of strings are the same as that of banduria and laud.
Guitar
The Guitar has six strings. The number of strings starts from the bottom to the top. It provides the chordal and arpeggio rhythmic accompaniments. Occasionally, it plays melodic passages. It provides steady rhythm for the group.
Bass Guitar (Bajo de Arco)
The biggest among the rondalla instrument is the Bass. It has four thick strings shaped like a big violin. The bow is an essential part of the Bass when used in a symphony orchestra. In the rondalla, the bow is not used. Unlike the guitar, the Bass has no frets. It is a must for bass player to have good ears and excellent sense of rhythm to be efficient in playing the instrument. It provides the fundamental chord tones and reinforces the beats in the absence of the drums.
Didjeridoo
An Australian Aboriginal musical instrument fashioned from a hollow tree branch considered to be a wind instrument. Other instruments The wooden block is also being used.
